“Because we love you. And we love the craft.”
This is Dr. Raw Organics‘ motto and it clearly resonates throughout the company. From the beautiful packaging to the carefully handcrafted products, their love for creating delicious edibles shines.
While a whole team of herbalists makes Dr. Raw Organics happen, Meghan, the co-founder/co-creator of the company, is the driving force behind the brand.
Let’s learn more about her and her vision for Dr. Raw Organics:
What was life before starting Dr. Raw Organics?
BA from the University of Florida; High School special education teacher for 6 years; Ashford University Admissions (cubicle hell lol)
How did your background help you with starting your company?
Teaching special education was one of the most influential parts of my 20’s. I was responsible for writing and executing the Vocational and Functional Living Skills curriculum for the Autism program. Teaching expands your ability to communicate with any walk of life, to be a leader that people want to follow and grow with and in my case most importantly, sparked my interest in alternative medicines. Our team is a family.
Communication skills, patience and trust are the keys to keeping our family happy, engaged and invested in growth. Ashford was also very life changing in a completely different way; I realized that cubicle life was not what I needed to be doing, saved my money and with my partner and our best friend we all left our jobs, sold all of our belongings and backpacked through Central and South America for a life changing year. Once back in the USA, I had a brief stint with Master Chef and really used the food inspiration from travel to create many of the current Dr. Raw products.
What is your inspiration for starting Dr. Raw Organics?
I moved to CA about 8 years ago and was always so disappointed with the quality of edibles I was able to find but really saw a need for high-quality medical cannabis. I have always been a baker and chef at heart so I thought, I can definitely do better than that! Around that same time, I met friends of friends on a quick trip to Rosarito that ran a collective and needed a quality edible line to carry. And so the creating began!
Through a few years of trial and error, lab test, taste testing pounds, and many very happy friends and patients the recipe book for Dr. Raw Organics was created. We personally live a very healthy lifestyle and truly believe in the benefits of an organic non-GMO diet, especially when the product is being used as a medicine and have put this passion into our products.
We were hesitant at first to tell our families back on the east coast- it’s a different world over there. But once we did the relationships grew stronger and everyone was extremely proud and genuinely interested in the medical benefits of cannabis. I believe 100% that if patients had the confidence to be fully open and honest about their experiences with cannabis, the truth would spread to the masses.
Who is on the Dr. Raw team?
Kyle and I are the founders of Dr. Raw and we have an amazing team of 8 supporting us. Being both life partners and business partners was something I had never really considered before, but we balance each other out perfectly and our talents easily complement each other and fit like a glove. Our strategy is “play to your strengths” and we are so lucky that our individual strengths come together to make a kick ass whole.
What challenges have you encountered along the way?
Starting any business is not an easy task, and one in this industry is like your grandparents used to tell you “I walked uphill 20 miles both ways in the snow!”
It is a constantly changing industry and you will meet a lot of closed doors along the way. We fully believe (and have been shown over and over again) that if you put positive energy and actions out into the world you will receive positive results in return.
“What if I never went to the arena? I continually use this quote to remind myself to take chances, follow your heart and don’t be afraid to succeed.”
What comprises the Dr. Raw Organics product line?
All of our products are made with 100% organic non-GMO ingredients. We have 4 baked good items (Chocolate Nirvana, Chocolate Chunk, Peanut Butter Blossom and a Red Velvet Brownie), a Vegan and gluten free Raw Bite, THC Hard Candy Hearts and a 1:1 CBD:THC hard candy heart. We also have CBD and THC Tinctures, as well as a Handmade 1:1 ratio Cannabis Balm.
And your best-seller?
Our best-selling product is the 1:1 CBD Candy Hearts. We will release a 4:1 ratio CBD:THC version of the hard candy in the coming weeks as well. You receive the medicine sublingually with the hard candy so you will feel the effects quickly. They are all 10mg of active cannabinoids per candy heart. The doctors we work with have found that less is actually more effective in many cases, especially with CBD. Candy hearts make it easy to dose yourself in small amounts with a quick effect.
What is unique about your products?
Our products are all handcrafted in small batches using 100% organic, non-GMO ingredients. Our chocolate and cocoa powders are all fair trade and lab tested for consistency. We also offer vegan and gluten-free options.
On embracing the industry:
Everyone in this industry wants to know “What the heck is going to happen? What will cannabis look like in 5 years? How can I best prepare for the future?” But not having these answers just makes this a more exciting and inspirational experience. We are all making huge contributions to a positive change in this world and should be proud!
And the future of Dr. Raw Organics?
To provide the best organic and sustainable edible products in CA. Once we have conquered the CA market, I see us moving into all other legal states through licensing agreements so that we can share our organic edibles with a larger market.
“People need to see the faces of cannabis in today’s society. The more of us that are open, honest and responsible with it the more socially accepted it will become.”
What words of advice can you give to budding edible makers?
Don’t ever lose your belief in what we are doing. Times get tough, and sometimes a bit scary. Constantly remind yourself why you started in this industry and your passion for healing the world with cannabis. Keep your standards the highest in the industry and always be open to change.
